Robin Hood Cottage, Little Walsingham
This cosy pub-turned-cottage in Norfolk is big enough for 12, which made it the perfect crash-pad for my family, plus another two sets of friends with kids one October weekend this year. Roomy and cosy in equal part, we let the fires blaze as we lounged on exceptionally comfy sofas, glass of local wine in hand (bought from the farm shop that was quite literally opposite the cottage front door). But this would also be a great spot for a multi-gen group. There's a separate room with its own kitchenette across the cobbled courtyard, a beautiful garden, and a long kitchen table – an open invite for big breakfasts enjoyed en masse. The location, too, was wonderful. Mere steps from a local steam train that chugged its way to Wells-next-the-Sea, so we headed to the beach on day one, and took the short drive to Burnham market on day two, where we wandered boutiques and eventually settled in for a Sunday pub lunch. Incredible lakefront home, Sennowe Park
Idyllic isn’t a strong enough word to describe this home, dreamed up by renowned local architect George Skipper, which means the interiors are just as lovely as its glassy lakeside surrounding. Take a minute for birdwatching – this area is known for being home to plenty of UK species – or simply doze on the lawn with your book. While the wood-beamed walls, high-pitched ceilings and smart furniture choices come together beautifully, the showstopper of the property has to be the wraparound balcony, which juts out over the lake on spindly wooden stilts. For stargazing and breakfasts with a view, it’s the best seat in the house. You can bring the kids, as there’s room for four, but mind there’s an additional charge. Grab the boat from the store and head out onto the water – or forgo it entirely and simply dive in. Even in such a scenic locale, this location is impressive – right in Sennowe Park, next to Pensthorpe Nature reserve and just a 20-minute drive to the coastline at Wells-next-the-Sea.

This polished barn conversion is tucked within a historic farmstead, opening into a surprisingly spacious design-led interior with mid-century touches, exposed beams and quiet, cosy corners. Wake up in the serene king-size bedroom with rolling countryside views, then roll into the bright kitchen in your slippers for breakfast. After a countryside romp, there’s an amazing bathtub to ease achy legs, in a pink onyx-tiled bathroom rivalling any of the area’s best hotels. Downstairs, a cosy living room, well-equipped kitchen and characterful dining space opens onto a rose-filled courtyard, where barbecues, cups of tea and cosy catch-ups sessions are a must. Oh, and don’t forget to say hello to your hosts’ two friendly Russian Blue cats, if they happen to stop by. The quaint market town of King’s Lynn is just a short drive away, and in the village, there’s plenty of wonderful walks nearby plus a friendly local pub.

Stepping into this smart red brick building in the quintessentially Norfolk village New Buckenham, you’d not expect the scene that awaits: it’s beautifully reimagined with cool white marble countertops, pearly grey wood panelling and a restrained Scandi sensibility you’d rather expect to find in the Nordics. Nonetheless, the original touches are all there, blending authentic character with contemporary comfort. Thoughtful touches – interior design books, games, a Netflix-ready TV, and Norfolk Natural Living toiletries – make it easy to unwind after country walks on the nearby common. There’s a small patio for morning coffee, and a great village pub just steps away. Stealing up to the mezzanine hideaway at bedtime adds an extra fun touch. No hotel can offer you sole use of a private tennis court – but this Airbnb in the cosy village of Silfield can. Inside feels just as a proper rural barn should – heavy oak sliding doors, chequered throws slung over the arms of a squashy tan leather sofa, and pin-drop quiet stillness all around. A sensitive renovation gives the rooms a smart modern edge (note the interesting brass chandelier hanging in the double-height space downstairs) and blackout blinds in the bedroom ensure blissful snoozing as long as you please. Let your host, Lisa, know if you need a cot for a little one – and if you’re lucky, she might leave you a basket of welcome goodies, as some other guests have received.
