Just when you think you know Greece, you’ll happen upon another slice of coast, sail to another island, or stumble across yet another one of the best hotels in Greece – and your perceptions are flipped all over again. Big-hitting Santorini (bright-white churches topped by blue domes that melt into the sky) and Mykonos (dinky beach bars arranged around a Venetian harbour) get a lot of attention. The scrubbier, craggier islands of Crete and Corfu, and the smaller, more bohemian flecks of land such as Antiparos and Syros are much-loved, too. On the mainland, Athens might be steeped in history but is always pushing boundaries with clever art, restaurants and bars. It's nearby coastal stretch, the Athens Riviera, is the latest hotspot to attract the world's heavy hitting hotel groups. And across the whole country are some of Europe’s best hotels – from sweeping retreats for switching off to stays built into caves and low-key hangouts that put wellness at the forefront of everything. The modernist white resort perches proudly on pine-scented hills, slowly revealing its geometric lines as one snakes from the dusty thrum of Athens to the glamour-drenched peninsula. Rooms continue the cool, clean palette, most with sweeping terrace views of the Aegean, and immaculately manicured olive trees frame sparkling swimming pools. Our favourite dinner is at the informal Taverna 37 for salt-baked sea bass, but daily tiradito from eatery Helios is a treat, especially as it’s opposite the wood-toy-packed kids club that keeps offspring amused between courses. We discover homegrown brands like Magoosh, Callista, and Zeus & Dione in the on-site boutique, and my daughter’s love affair with drawing comics begins with a brilliant hands-on lesson with an Athenian cartoonist. With a diet of daily tennis lessons, sweeping views, a just-the-right-side-of-glam crowd, and luscious sea swims, you can see why the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens ticks so many boxes for so many people. The first time I stayed at Verina Astra, in 2015, there were just seven rooms. The cliffside setting on the wild eastern coast of Sifnos, Greece, felt like a gamble. Upon opening, there was no restaurant, but breakfast was a celebration of Sifnian flavours – flaky pies, local cheeses, seasonal fruits – delivered to each suite in a straw basket, served in handmade ceramics crafted by the island’s potters. An infinity pool, added later on, created the illusion of floating on the unbroken horizon. The young owner-managers, Isidora Chandeli and Miltos Salemis, had recently fallen in love and had big dreams for their new venture. Fast-forward a decade and Verina Astra is one of the country’s most exceptional hotels. The 16 rooms and suites have better bathrooms and even bigger terraces than the initial seven but share the same back-to-nature aesthetic. Solicitous staff waft between the alfresco tapas bar and thatched cabanas of the Elemis spa. Chefs tend to the kitchen gardens, harvesting the ingredients for heirloom salads at Bostani, the hopelessly romantic field-to-fork restaurant. Isidora and Miltos are married now, and their hotel baby is all grown-up – but the laid-back vibe and sense of place are very much unchanged. Rachel Howard

The Chaidemenos family caves were formed in the 17th century by a volcanic eruption, and they were turned into wine cellars in the 1980s. In 1985, Ioannis Chaidemenos and his wife, Anna, began to have other ideas. From there, Canaves Ena was born, and, 40 years on, in 2024, a dramatic renovation was unveiled. A Cycladic path now winds around 18 blistering white suites, a mirror-shiny pool, and an excellent Greek restaurant. It’s bijou and pin-drop quiet, all Santorinian marble and pale woods, with flashes of pink bougainvillaea flowers creeping up stucco walls. Most rooms have plunge pools or bubbling jacuzzis – and, from every angle, utterly glorious views over the glittering caldera below. Charley Ward

It’s the steps down to the stone-clad spa here that I remember most clearly. Perhaps because I was eight months pregnant, and hyper-aware, but mainly because they were straight from a fairy tale: so dinky and intriguing, paved into the hillside and bordered by lush Mediterranean foliage. I’d walk down them to a different treatment every day, as per the family-owned hotel’s advice – gradually unwinding, resetting, reviving, listening and watching the waves of the Ionian Sea through huge open windows. Porto Zante is ideal for a babymoon. The villas are vast, design-driven but ultra-comfortable, with a temperature-controlled pool and a personal concierge, who embraced us and said, “You are our babies now”. Few places in Europe are as private or have service levels to match this. Want to eat from the Japanese-Asian menu at Maya, but in the Greek-Mediterranean Club House so you can listen to the resident pianist? Done. Need some time out from your toddler, but they’re resisting the kids’ club? The determined staff will have them giggling in no time. Are you keen to explore the surrounding sea and villages or the nearby city? Itineraries can be arranged on the day and then adapted from the four-by-four or yacht. It’s no wonder that presidents, royals and cultural icons come here to disappear down those magical steps whenever they need to lighten their mental load. Becky Lucas

Over the past few years, Ikos has rapidly established itself as the all-inclusive brand for stress-free luxury holidays in Europe. Its beginnings are in Greece (there are now five dotted around the country, plus two in Spain), and this is its second opening in Corfu (the first, Ikos Dassia, is located just around the bay). The same template is rolled out in each resort, with its airy atriums and serene colour choices – yet it doesn’t feel repetitive. Repeat customers agree: there’s comfort in the familiarity here, and within a night you’ll see why weary parents, grandparents and burnt-out couples return to an Ikos time and time again. There’s an effortless elegance to this idyllic slice of Mykonos that can only stem from having its heart in the right place. With a beautiful family history and an innate sensibility for doing things ‘the right way,’ this address is undoubtedly one of the best hotels on the island, and in all of Greece. Morning here starts at Elais Eestaurant, which might just be one of the most beautiful restaurants I’ve been to in Europe. A vision in blue, the sweeping terrace sports a multitude of shades, from the striped parasols to the blue and white tiles and perfectly mish-mashed prints and pillows on the banquette seating. Combined with the bright Aegean blue backdrop and the well-heeled linen-clad guests the scene wouldn’t look out of place in a vintage Ralph Lauren commercial. The nod to American style is apt – Santa Marina is beloved by a jet-setting crowd (there's room to dock your yacht, plus a helipad), but is particularly popular with discerning New Yorkers. In addition to style, Santa Marina has also been blessed with the ultimate location – on a hillside overlooking Ornos Bay, with the only private sandy beach on the island. Curl up in one of the cabanas at the beach club and you'll never want to leave, and nor do you need to – cocktails and sushi can be brought straight to you. Lauren Burvill

One&Only is the first major hotel group to open on Kea, a little-known Cycladic island not far from mainland Greece. The design emphasizes locally sourced stones, with lots of open, mottled-concrete structures that let the natural cove setting speak for itself. Tranquility is key; rooms are more like individual villas, and have private patios, secluded balconies, and 24- and 29.5-foot infinity pools. For such a contained resort, there's a lot on offer. At the foot of the valley is the tree-shaded Bond Beach Club, which serves Mediterranean-Asian fusion cuisine, and behind that is the spa, the largest within the One&Only group, where guests can indulge in bespoke treatments from Subtle Energies. Then there’s its kids club and sports centre, with a tennis court and a paddleball court, and guests can book in for scuba diving and day trips on its 1967 wood yacht. At the peak of the hilltop is the central lobby and main restaurant with almost panoramic views across the Aegean and to the temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio beyond. Charlotte Davey

Think pine forests, ancient olive groves, cappuccino beaches, a private marina, five luxurious hotels and 26 restaurants to dip into. At its edge, on a peaceful hillside, lies Sani Club – the resort’s most recently refurbished hotel. Life feels effortlessly serene. And how could it not, when a stay combines panoramic sea views from a super king bed, a quiet stretch of sand and a line-up of exclusive activities.
For families, it’s a dream – connecting rooms, garden suites and private pools give everyone space to be together, yet still enjoy their own privacy. For little ones, there’s a fantastic OFSTED-standard creche, as well as the Kids’ Club and Ozone Teen Club, allowing parents to relax while their children are happily entertained. Then there are the academies. Young football fans can join the Chelsea FC Football Academy, budding tennis stars can visit the Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre, adventurers can try the Bear Grylls Survival Academy, or head to the Tree Top Adventure for a dose of wobbly thrills. There’s even sailing for aspiring captains, plus the KTM Biking, Scuba Diving, and Water Ski Academies. Beyond the snap-happy visitors and undulating whitewashed walls of Imerovigli village lies a boutique hideaway that’s a masterclass in Cycladic simplicity. Where subdued and serene design takes a backseat to the show-stopping caldera views. Owner Daphne Valambous spent her childhood summers in this house, and apart from the addition of several plunge pools and a professional kitchen, not much has changed since her father built it in the 1980s. Although by no means child-friendly, The Vasilicos is one of the few Santorini hotels that don’t have an adults-only policy, making it an ideal option for families travelling with older kids. For couples, check in to the Efta suite, a quiet cocoon slotted into the cliffside that’s completely secluded from view, and don’t miss sunset aperitifs at the two-table guests-only restaurant. The Dolli, Athens, is a city escape with a difference. The rooftop creates the optical illusion that you’re swimming through the shimmering columns of the Parthenon. In reality, the temple hovers just overhead while the historic heart of Athens dazzles five floors below. In between, there are 46 rooms, suites, and apartments in soothing shades of pale — a serene reprieve from the 24-hour buzz on the doorstep. Ranging in size from bijou doubles to deluxe pieds-à-terre and connecting suites that are more like serviced apartments, The Dolli’s rooms vary considerably in size and outlook. All have creamy colour schemes, swanky marble bathrooms with walk-in showers big enough for two, 3.5-metre-high ceilings and enormous windows, so even the entry-level rooms feel bright and well-proportioned. When it comes to dining, dainty petit fours and excellent cappuccinos are served in the lounge and library, but the culinary scene centres around that rooftop restaurant. The classic menu is very accomplished (and very expensive), and caters to a high-rolling international crowd. You’re an easy walk from other dining options, though, as well as ruins, flea markets and high-street chains. Rachel Howard

Since the 1960s, Mykonos has been known for a very singular brand of hedonism. One that revolves around dance-until-sunrise parties fueled by cocktails and thumping DJ beats. Kalesma is a pulse-slowing alternative that taps into the zeitgeist with yoga sessions, mocktails, a cold plunge, and views so spectacular that even device-addicted guests abandon their screens. Perched on a bougainvillaea-draped hilltop overlooking Ornos Bay, this discreet retreat has no shortage of pleasures, from a sensational farm-to-fire restaurant to a dazzling new spa. Twenty-five one-bedroom suites and villas all have plunge pools as well as sunrise and sunset views. They’ve become so in demand the owners are adding 19 for next season. Jen Murphy

The latest milestone in the revival of the Athenian Riviera, Greece’s first One & Only resort offers an unstuffy approach to ultra-luxury. In its 1960s heyday, Asteria beach was a playground for socialites and starlets; many black-and-white Greek movies were shot in the Modernist bungalows and open-air restaurant. The new buildings follow the exact blueprint of the original layout, with 141 bungalows, villas and residences and 14 One&Only Private Homes scattered between lush gardens and the shoreline. Interiors are a tour de force of discreet decadence, but it’s the seamless service and cut-above amenities that really elevate the experience. The luscious Guerlain spa is reason enough to book a stay; the nourishing honey and orchid facials are phenomenal. It would take weeks to work through the sensational breakfast spread at Ora restaurant, curated by Michelin Star chef Ettore Botrini (don’t miss the almond and feta cake). By night, Ora’s lemon-yellow booths become a lively setting for an accessible but accomplished Greco-Italian menu. Every guest has two dedicated hosts, on call round-the-clock (via What’s App) for super-prompt room service, restaurant reservations, padel and tennis sessions, or SUP lessons with the Greek national champion. The slim beach is not the best swimming on the Athens Riviera — but once you’re inside this cloistered enclave, you couldn’t care less. If you get antsy, the Acropolis is a 30-minute drive. Private museum tours and boat trips can be arranged. The resort's newest gem is Manko Athens, a dynamic day-to-night dining destination that transitions from sunny DJ-soundtracked afternoons to a chic evening hideout. Rachel Howard

The private Costa Navarino reserve in the Peloponnese’s Messenia is already known for its dunes, secret bays, world-class golf courses and family-friendly resorts – but Mandarin Oriental’s Greek debut takes things up a notch. With sweeping views of the coast, the resort is cast organically into the hillside, with flora-topped pool villas and gardens alive with pirouetting butterflies and bushels of oleander and rosemary. The 51 suites and 48 pool villas are spacious, and even entry-level rooms can interconnect for families. The creations of local artisans are everywhere, from the bespoke latticework headboards to the organic thyme-flavoured chocolate. Breakfast tapas, or paramana, are served on the lavender-scented terrace of Oliviera restaurant, including homemade yogurt topped with pistachio and honeycomb, and milk cake. Aside from Eastern Mediterranean restaurant Tahir (whose silken baba ghanoush is a must), the pizza omakase counter at Pizza Sapienza impresses with its 48-hour-proved, perfectly singed slices topped with freshly picked courgette flowers and local horta bitter greens with nduja. The citrus-hued spa has a panoramic 25 metre pool and indoor- outdoor gym stocked with pepper and ginger kombucha shots. This is a resort for all generations, with access to Costa Navarino’s four golf courses, tennis academy and plentiful water sports; and new free kids’ club, laden with wooden toys. Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2024, the GB (as locals fondly call it) is almost as much of an Athenian landmark as the Parthenon. The 5th-century-BC monument itself floats like a mirage just beyond the hotel’s lofty rooftop bar and restaurant, which overlooks the Parliament piazza where statuesque Evzones, members of the Presidential Guard, strut their stuff. If the location feels “only in Athens,” the interiors have all the glitzy trappings of a grand European hotel: gleaming marble inlay floors, flamboyant flower arrangements, giant gilded mirrors. Liveried doormen usher you through the revolving doors into what feels like a parallel universe, where the hubbub of downtown Athens gives way to the tinkling piano in the stained-glass-ceilinged winter garden, where afternoon tea is served by slinky waitresses who glide between the fluted columns. The lesser-known draw is not the fine dining or even the secret seventh-floor swimming pool but the subterranean spa. A profoundly therapeutic massage and plumping 111 Skin facial with one of the brilliantly intuitive therapists will leave you feeling at least 150 years younger. Rachel Howard

Worlds away from the madness of Mykonos Old Town, Cali Mykonos is where it’s at if you want to experience Cycladic nirvana without the booze-loving crowds. Inspired by the Greek myths and legends of your school days, the dapper boutique is the work of Kyriakos Mourkakos, a 27-year-old Greek American entrepreneur who has a crush on all things muted luxury. Hidden on a craggy fortress on the shores of the secluded beach town of Kalafati, its slick white columns hover down to the sea in perfect unison. The place is mighty pretty. There’s a secluded umbrella-flecked private beach. A sexy curvaceous pool. Private yacht charters to neighbouring Naxos and Delos. Heck, there’s even a helipad with breezy, untouched sea views. Elsewhere, there’s a swell shop kitted out in all the latest Athens-approved fashion and the brilliant white walls and nooks are splashed with indie Grecian art and curios from across the land. Slick rooms are a vision of muted tones and ridiculously smooth Greek marble, and there are saltwater pools on the ginormous sea-facing terraces. All food is courtesy of Greece’s first Michelin-starred chef, Lefteris Lazarou, and is a fusion affair. Eat poolside for a perfect Greek sunset. Luke Abrahams

Hidden in the shadows of pine-forested Mount Ainos, F Zeen melts into sandy, sheltered Lourdas bay. Spread out across the sloping sun-drenched coastline, golden buildings are dotted between winding paths, each with unobstructed sea views. Exercise classes, wellness activities and excursions are scribbled onto a giant blackboard by reception at the beginning of each week, ranging from personal training sessions and yoga and meditation classes to snorkelling, paddle boarding and mountain hikes. There is a spa, plus three separate swimming pools to choose from each day – not including the glittering ocean, just steps from the hotel, with private sunbeds and views of Zakynthos in the distance. Owner Christof Koumoudos and his family are from Kefalonia and have always loved the island's ethos. They connected with the core values held by those who had been living on the island for generations; a sense of connecting with nature and promoting a healthy, wellness-oriented lifestyle. The name F Zeen (ευ ζην) means “the good life” in ancient Greek, and the retreat is centred around promoting the island’s calming, nature-focused ethos. Olivia Morelli

Laguna Cost Resort's unique setting in the heart of an ambitious 480-acre regeneration project – the largest in the Cyclades – is what makes it special. But booking a visit is also an excuse to visit sun-soaked, fertile Naxos, an earthy Greek island paradise, known for its epic food scene, ancient ruins and gleaming traditional whitewashed hilltop villages. The hotel is the brainchild of born-and-bred Naxian, Antonios Pittaras, who has a passion for his home island and a PhD in environmental protection. It's part of a wider ecological project he presented to Pope Francis at the Vatican and at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which aims to clean up the coastline and lagoon and partner with international universities for biodiversity research projects. It's also beautiful. I check into the Golden Reef Villa at the back of the resort near the outdoor gym and sauna, with a view of Chora and next to a wild landscape teeming with birds. Perfect for families, it’s one of a handful of two-storey villas with two bedrooms; one on the ground floor, and another on a glassy mezzanine with a cute window seat. There’s no traditional spa, but e-bikes are available for hire, and guests can choose from six types of massages and two facial treatments, carried out in the fabric-draped pavilion next to the gym or in their rooms. The restaurant serves an especially good breakfast, and in the evening, tables are also set on the rooftop, strung with fairy lights and with views over to the neighbouring island of Paros. A considered boho revamp has given this classic Crete hotel on the north-east shore of the island a second wind. Opened by the Sbokou family in the 1980s, with low-rise buildings set in tropical gardens of banana trees, palms and cacti, it is now drawing in a curious Euro crowd. The modernist spaces were cleverly designed more than three decades ago – despite having 204 rooms the property never feels overcrowded. Nature envelops it all: the many trees provide shade throughout the grounds and the grassy lawn makes everything smell cool and fresh even in the searing summer heat. As one of our favourite family hotels in Europe, little ones come out of the kids’ club giggling before splashing into the river-like swimming pool, racing for the pink-flamingo and crocodile inflatables. Make a beeline for the deluxe family bungalows – with their built-in bunks and separate bedrooms for the grown-ups, they get snapped up early. At Mouries restaurant, the large open kitchen with a huge fireplace hosts cooking lessons using vegetables from the garden during the day and becomes a farm-to-table taverna after sunset. It’s lovely to feast on local flavours under the starry sky listening to the sound of the lyre.

Looking across the water from Porto Heli to Spetses, the first thing you notice is the Poseidonion, jutting out like a vast, immaculately frosted cake above the shore. On opening in 1914, it was the first hotel in the Balkans with hot water, and was constructed with steel from Germany, wood from Romania and limestone from Bulgaria: only the best would do, whatever the cost. Years of decay followed, and there are stories of bathrooms collapsing down three floors into the lobby. But now, fully restored and extended by its owner, Emmanuel Vordonis, it is, once again, immensely glamorous and international. It has the feel of a very wealthy and adored Edwardian maiden aunt, taking a detour from the usual Côte d’Azur to enjoy instead the delights of a Greek island. There are rooms with sea views and garden views, pool suites, royal suites and a Tower Room – all in a classic pale palette that reflects the island light to such an extent that you have the suspicion, now and again, that you’re somehow floating. The seafood is excellent, and dining on the outside terrace you really feel the electricity, communal warmth and humour of this very special island. Antonia Quirke
- Antiparos is a curious mix of go-slow wilderness and upscale Cycladic chic. Highfliers come and go to their modernist villas by helicopter, but hippies still hang out on the island’s campsite and party all night in the pint-sized port town. Straddling a peaceful valley overlooking Livadia bay, The Rooster bridges the two faces of the island beautifully. You could come here for a romantic escape, a <a href=https://www.cntraveller.com/"https://www.cntraveller.com/gallery/wellness-retreats-environment-preservation/">wellness retreat</a>, or even a family holiday. 16 stone villas, each with a private pool, are scattered among flourishing Mediterranean gardens. The vibe is more second home than hotel suite: tan-and-tawny interiors come with wine coolers and kimonos, and shady terraces with outdoor kitchens and showers let the natural surroundings sing.
