10 best hotels in Vietnam, the land of jade lagoons, secret coves and the mighty Mekong River
Hotels in Vietnam have long been overlooked in favour of nearby hospitality heavyweights such as Indonesia and Thailand. But over the past few years, the country has been playing catch-up with new arrivals pitching up no-expense-spared beach resorts and plugged-in city hotels that give many of their Southeast Asian competitors a run for their money. With mile after palm-frilled mile of beach hemming its eastern coast and a thrillingly rich culture to draw inspiration from, it was only a matter of time before the world's luxury brands came calling. Six Senses was one of the first to get in on the action – opening on the remote Con Dao island in 2010. Then came Amanoi, which sits off the grid on the spectacular Vinh Hy Bay. Since then, many of the smart new arrivals delve deep into Vietnam's intricate history with designs that riff on the country's French-tinged colonial past, or the crafts and vernacular dwellings of the more than fifty Indigenous groups that call Vietnam home.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
Generally, the best time to go to Vietnam is between April and June, when the north emerges from its chilly winter season. Around this time, skies will usually be clear across the country, and temperatures will be pleasant (as in not excruciatingly hot and humid). Right after this period, tropical storms and bouts of heavy downpours (especially in the south) need to be considered when planning travel. Why does that extended family of 15, ranging in ages from 7 to 70, seem totally at home at this beachfront hotel restaurant overlooking the South China Sea – the adults languidly sipping their rosé while the kids come and go, playing in the waves and then dashing back to the table? In part because they’ve been here for three weeks. Zannier Bãi San Hô, located in the south-central Vietnamese province of Dak Lak and set on 240 acres of verdant hills and ancient rice paddies – and with a mile-long sandy beach – is the type of place guests come back to again and again, staying a little longer each year.
The 73 freestanding villas are inspired by traditional styles, such as simple wood fisherman’s homes on stilts or traditional bamboo-clad houses of the Ede and Cham tribes. Interiors spotlight natural materials: rattan furniture, jute lampshades, and gorgeous linen and silk textiles in earthy shades. The food at all four of the dining options is excellent, with the breakfast spread at the all-day Nhà ở being truly impressive. While a day trip to see Cham architectural ruins is a must-do, there isn’t the pressure to pack your days with programming beyond maybe a game of tennis, a spa treatment, or a morning yoga session before hitting the beach. The ocean’s rhythmic waves crash over an unspoiled, wheat-gold stretch of sand. Hemming the washboard sandbars dotted with scurrying crabs are ancient sea almond trees, swaying palms, creaking bamboo and the staggering Elephant Mountain, on whose back the sun sets each evening. We kick off our shoes (and sullenly retrieve them six days later) to run down the ten stone steps from our airy beachfront villa, straight into the sea. The salty water is the perfect temperature, softening our skin over the next week in ways that, simply put, no spa ever could. Following our 15-hour journey, we prop our feet up on a wooden sand-dusted backgammon board and order a mid-morning brunch of black Vietnamese coffee, homemade aged kombucha, green papaya salad topped with mud crab, and summer rolls stuffed with prawns, roughly-cut rice noodles and every herb under the sun from the hotel’s prolific garden.
To classify this place as a resort doesn’t feel right: it’s too intimate, and too integrated in the lush ecosystem that surrounds it. In a way, it could be coined the hotel equivalent to quiet luxury, where your masseuse is (casually) a 5th generation Ayurvedic doctor, the oyster and enoki mushrooms in your pho are grown in a shed behind the open-air gym, and the villa’s deep-set bathtub and infinity pool overlooking the horizon are juxtaposed with a rustic outdoor shower, where the cicadas loudly outsing the rushing water. We sleep like rocks in a ylang-ylang scented bed, but the act of touching down here alone is an instant antidote to jet lag. Tamara Southward

You’re forgiven if the Regent brand has slipped off your radar. After its heyday in the ’80s and ’90s, it failed to keep up with splashier newcomers and eventually lost its lustre. Decades later, Regent Phu Quoc is the product of an ambitious brand revival and has already raised the bar in a country that isn’t exactly short of dreamy beach retreats. The message is clear: Regent has (re-)entered the chat. This lush resort is laid out like a Rorschach test, with about 63 villas circling a lagoon and a tall hotel wing on either side.
The suites and villas are effortlessly chic and comfortable, with plenty of fresh flowers and, in most cases, a full kitchen. I kept finding new ingenuities that made me think: I can’t believe they thought of that. A set of loungers on both ends of my private pool, so I wouldn’t have to drag them in and out of the sun. Dental kits with a choice between mint or ginger. Wireless phone charging pads on the bedsides, and – get this – a fully stocked second minibar in the bedroom because god forbid I’d have to totter to the kitchen for a cold drink after bedtime. Phu Quoc isn’t as culture-rich as Vietnam’s other regions, but this luxury gem has all the trimmings for an idyllic long-haul fly-and-flop. Chris Schalkx

$$$A dazzling destination that flashes back beautifully to a bygone age, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi has been a fixture in the heart of the Vietnamese capital since 1901. Behind its classical white façade, two buildings – the original and recently renovated Heritage Wing and the neoclassical Opera Wing, named for its proximity to the Hanoi Opera House – envelop a serene courtyard garden and sparkling pool flanked by a bar. The historic suites, named after famous former guests, including Charlie Chaplin and novelist Graham Greene, exude a sense of old-world grandeur, while its peaceful French Quarter locale makes it a no-brainer when planning a trip to Hanoi. InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort
Set amid the hills of the Son Tra Peninsula, surrounded by lush jungle and ancient temples, Danang is Vietnam's riviera. And the InterContinental is its standout hotel, a resplendent fixture with plenty of imposing clout. Designed by Thailand-based architect Bill Bensley (see Bangkok's stunning Siam hotel and Krabi's otherworldly Phulay Bay), it's an extraordinary and spirited feat of building, inspired by local villages, with a hint of French colonialism, tumbling down a hillside so steep there's a funicular railway to get you from top to bottom.
Come here and do nothing but walk from the shoreline to the main reception and back again a few times and you'll leave with buns of steel. But you can also just hole up and drink in the scenery. Bedrooms have uninterrupted views of the tempestuous sky and the milky sea far below. All of them are vast, light-filled and smart, with monochrome fabrics and bathrooms with carved stone tubs almost big enough to swim in. Amanoi, Ninh Thuan
With its craggy cliffs and gnarled trees, the rugged beauty of Vinh Hy Bay provides a spectacular backdrop for off-the-grid Amanoi, whose serene villas jut out from a 100-hectare sea of evergreen draped over the hills fringing the Nui Chua National Park in south-central Vietnam. Designed by Belgian starchitect and Aman stalwart Jean-Michel Gathy, the resort's straight-lined and slate-roofed villas and pavilions feel like little Vietnamese temples of relaxation, thanks to their pared-back interiors from blonde wood and hushed grey textiles. Azerai Can Tho
It's hard to believe that this hush-hush haven of scurrying squirrels, birdsong and vine-dripping banyan trees is just a five-minute boat transfer away from Can Tho's high-octane city centre. Taking over a jungle-fringed islet in the Hau River, Azerai Can Tho delivers island idyll in spades yet puts its guests within easy reach of the highlights of the Mekong Delta. The Aman-like architecture and pared-back interiors of its rooms (each set in two-room villas facing either the sprawling gardens or the river) and sprawling pool villas are no coincidence: Azerai's founder, Indonesian hospitality heavyweight Adrian Zecha, also founded the illustrious Aman group and infused the property with many of the same Zen-inducing hallmarks (a soothing spa, lush landscaping and plenty of open space).
The main restaurant, where tables spill out onto wooden decks over a lotus-dotted lake, specialises in recipes from around the delta – think tangy canh chua fish soup or banh tam rice noodles in coconut sauce – but leave time to graze around Can Tho's cacophonous night market, which unfurls just a short walk west from the hotel's mainland jetty. In an age where straight-lined and beige hotel designs predominate, Hanoi's luxury address waltzes to a refreshingly different beat. Hotel designer Bill Bensley drew inspiration from the neoclassical Hanoi Opera House down the street and ran with it. From the lobby lounge studded with stage props and murals of camera-flashing paparazzi to the 47 suites individually designed as tributes to actors, singers and play designers of yore – every element of Capella Hanoi nods to the golden age of opera. It's an Art Deco jumble of mirrors and marble, a mishmash of ornate hand-painted wallpapers, jewel-hued textiles, and rooms – each unique – with golden trimmings that'd turn Jay Gatsby green with envy.
Just as much care has been put into the restaurant menus. Breakfasts at the theatrical Backstage include table-side banh mi carts, artisanal bubble tea and pho by one of Anthony Bourdain's favourite Vietnamese chefs, Anh Tuyet. Upstairs, rooftop restaurant Hudson Rooms nods to 1920s New York with caviar and oysters on ice, while Koki, a sleek, subterranean dining room one floor above the hotel's crystal-chandeliered pool and spa, delivers chi-chi Japanese. It's easy to see why Arnaud Zannier, the French hotelier behind the eponymous family-owned Zannier hotel group, fell for this kilometre-long swoop of white sand in south-central Vietnam's little-visited Phu Yen province. From the highest point of his 240-acre estate, you can watch endless hills roll into the hazy distance, while from the ancient rice paddies at its heart, it's as if you've stumbled into a remote corner of rural Vietnam. Zannier Bai San Ho's villas – most with private pools – further hammer down the away-from-it-all feel. Each one is carefully positioned to make the most of its setting either high up in the hills or ensconced in a patch of jungle along the beach, while their designs pay tribute to the vernacular building styles of nearby fisherfolk and tribal communities around the country.
Inside, they deliver a richly textured melange of creamy muslin textiles, wooden floors, thatched ceilings and cob walls, accentuated by local clay pottery and hundreds of antiques collected from around the globe. The antique-studded lobby lounge, cavernous spa and panoramic all-day Nha O restaurant follow a similar theme, while at the beach, the rattan-clad Lang Chai restaurant and bar double down on the toes-in-the-sand vibe. Phu Yen is short on bucket-list sights. Other than a guided tour around the surrounding seafood markets and fishing communities, this is prime beach-lazing and pool-lolling territory. Chris Schalkx

The Anam Mui Ne
After the success of its first resort in Cam Ranh, the Vietnamese-owned Anam group opened a second outpost in Mui Ne, a palm-studded resort town some two hours east of Ho Chi Minh City. The theme is Indochine-chic, nodding to Vietnam's grand French villas with kaleidoscopically tiled floors, sculpted corniches and classic teak wood furnishing. The beachfront resort is also a celebration of local arts and crafts: each of the 127 rooms and suites features oil paintings by Vietnamese artists, and more than 120 ceramic works by artisans from the indigenous Cham community are spread around the premises.
Guests can fill multiple days with jaunts around Mui Ne's famed white- and red-sand dunes or the 8th-century Champa ruins in nearby Phan Thiet, but The Anam offers plenty of reasons to stay put: there's a holistic spa offering Hawaiian lomi-lomi massages and Balinese rubdowns, a dreamy pool shaded by towering palms, and a handful of wine- and dine options that include pan-Vietnamese classics at the beachfront Lang Viet restaurants, or private seafood BBQ feasts set up in the resort's pool suites.
