Best for: Great value fine dining
Approachable fine dining is the order of the day at Elements, a relatively new restaurant on the outskirts of Glasgow. Its Bearsden postcode is perfectly considered to play to the well-heeled local crowd, but its pulling power extends beyond its already-loyal neighbours, with it steadily building a reputation as a destination restaurant. Chef Gary Townsend is passionate about seasonality, and his menu is an encyclopedia of the very best British ingredients. Every meal starts with canapes and ends with petit fours, so you get all the trimmings, and starters might be beef short rib with onion, watercress and beef dashi, while a main of duck with yellow peach and duck fat potatoes has proven an instant hit. The slick front-of-house team and the polished interiors round things off for a special occasion spot.

Fallachan Kitchen
Best for: A unique experience
A first of its kind in Glasgow, Fallachan offers communal fine dining from the industrial surroundings of a candlelit railway arch. Ten courses of staunchly seasonal fare come accompanied by detailed – bordering on nicely nerdy – explanations of ingredients and techniques. With six members of staff to a maximum of 12 diners, it feels luxuriously intimate as you watch food being made from the open counter just a foot or two away from you.
Chef Craig Grozier demonstrates a keen talent for turning things on their head, presenting culinary surprises along the way like a langoustine cocktail that’s a spicy shellfish drink in a coupe rather than a pale pink seventies starter. As is the nature of such restaurants, the menu changes regularly, but a highlight for us included a soft, sticky pork jowl cut with cucumber, pine and meadowsweet. With woodruff, dog whelks, pickled magnolia and rowan shoot ice cream peppered throughout, for example, it’s likely that you’ll be introduced to at least a few new flavours. The convivial setting encourages diners to ask questions and engage both with the team and their fellow guests for a truly interactive evening of high-level cookery, smartly matched wines and interesting conversation.

Gloriosa
Best for: A trip to the continent
Rosie Healey brought Gloriosa to Glasgow in 2020, and she says her purpose is to make food that makes people feel like they’re on holiday. It’s evidenced in her bright Mediterranean plates that have kept her dining room packed since she flung the doors open. The relaxed space has a log burner at one end and is wrapped on two sides by windows, so it strikes a unique balance of being light and airy yet cosy. Illuminated by candles come evening and open seven days a week, it’s a safe bet for those looking for food that rarely misses the mark.
There are some constants – so that you can get comfortable getting to know favourites – like the squashy, liberally salted focaccia and the puffed up choux buns, but there’s also plenty of change to maintain dynamism. Generous piles of veg, lots of fish and a good dose of aromatics like bright lemon zest, grassy olive oil and fresh herbs do what Healey set out to achieve: transport you to somewhere altogether sunnier than Glasgow’s west end. The warm staff work the room in a blur, bringing plates of things like charred and dressed courgettes and mixed beans; buttery chanterelle pasta and very good spicy margaritas.

Best for: Meat eaters
Red-topped tables, a clanging open kitchen and wobbly candles stuffed into wax-covered bottles: Big Counter has an air of nonchalance about it that makes it hard not to love. The team are friendly and casual, working the dining room as if it’s their house and you’ve just popped by for dinner, sitting with guests and discussing details of the menu at length. The line-up is formulaic, so you’ll always find the same sorts of plates in various seasonal guises throughout the year. Wedges of bread and butter plus gildas to start, piles of salads and homemade pastas next and then onto mains of sharing cuts of steak in different sauces or butters or a whole fish grilled and smothered in chimichurri. It’s casual but the food is the kind you’ll instantly fall for. If you avoid overdoing it on the savouries you’ll be rewarded with retro desserts like treacle tart or lemon meringue pie. Also, it’s worth noting that there aren’t many vegetarian options here.

Naomi VanceCelentano’s
Best for: Modern Italian food
Chef Dean Parker previously worked with Robin Gill (Darby’s, Sorella, etc). A few years ago, he upped sticks to Glasgow with his wife Anna to open their first solo venture, Celentano’s. Set in Cathedral House opposite the city’s famed Necropolis and cathedral, the restaurant was awarded Michelin’s Bib Gourmand accolade for its Italian-leaning menu of convivial sharing plates, which also showcases the best of Scotland's larder.
Begin with freshly baked sourdough and homemade chicken liver parfait before moving onto reels of pappardelle in creamy Dexter beef sauce, agnolotti with velvety ricotta and Loch Etive trout with miso-butter cavolo nero. The house Negroni glows against the dark green wood panelling, offset by chequered board flooring and rattan barstools. Look out for special Sunday tasting menus, often accompanied by live music. Sebb’s
Best for: Late-night dining
There isn’t anywhere else like Sebb’s in Glasgow, with its pulsing basement jam-packed with punters keen to let their dinner stretch out into the night. The restaurant is squeezed into a series of brick arches and has a distinctly clubby vibe, with a DJ on most nights and an accomplished barteam turning out cocktails with a technical edge thanks to the on-site ‘laboratory’. The menu is a wonderful mismatch of cuisines that makes for excellent drinking fodder thanks to plenty of carbs and big, bold flavours. Think beef and lamb kofta, with mango, green chilli and almonds or jerk-spiced pork belly with carrot slaw and pickled apple. It’s also worth noting that Sebb’s is downstairs from Margo, which also features on this list, so can make a great after dinner drinking spot too in its own right.

Best for: Elevated pub grubThe Clarence is a rare breed of pub that somehow manages to retain a nice local boozer atmosphere while simultaneously serving up excellent gastropub fare. The space is split in tow, with downstairs tables clustered around the central bar (ideal for drinks and snacks), while upstairs feels more like a restaurant with the mezzanine filled with smart booths. These overlook the whole space, which means you still get the buzz of the space without having to be entirely submerged in it. A lovely spot for a celebration or family dinner, the menu spans both reliable old favourites (chicken Kyiv) and more unexpected internationally-inspired bites (prawn toast with chive mayo and smoked vinegar).

Margo is the brainchild of some of Glasgow’s most-loved restaurateurs who also head up Ox & Finch, Ka Pao and Sebb’s. Having opened in 2024, Margo appears to have quickly become their flagship and has taken up residency in central Glasgow (a stone’s throw from Queen Street Station), which has recently found itself somewhat lacking in decent places to eat. Margo is gargantuan, with a double-height dining room accommodating huge swathes of diners, but somehow it doesn’t lose its cosy, familiar feel thanks to an expert team proficient in both efficient service and a warm welcome. Food here takes a please-all approach with British ingredients being given a punch from internationally celebrated flavours, like in Shetland mussels with Breton cider and sobrasada or grilled mackerel with puttanesca, nocellara del belice olives and rouille.

Naomi VanceKa Pao
Best for: Big, bold flavours
Owned by the same team as Ox & Finch, Ka Pao presents a similarly eclectic menu, showcasing a fusion of flavours from across Southeast Asia. There are a handful of dishes which have earned cult status from regulars. These include the corn ribs with salted coconut, shrimp and lime and the fried chicken with fish sauce caramel and pickled banana chillies. It’s a place to bring a group and share most of the menu between a few of you – which you can do for £32 per person thanks to a feasting deal. The restaurant is found in the basement of an old car garage and the interiors have a cavernous industrial feel that’s softened with plenty of foliage from potted plants. Ka Pao also makes a great cocktail and there’s a mango soft serve for dessert, in case you need any further persuasion.

NAOMI VANCEOx and Finch
Best for: Classic dishes with a modern edge
There’s a reason this restaurant isn’t budging from every round-up of Glasgow’s best restaurants. In the heart of the city’s West End, Ox and Finch reopened after an extensive refurb recently and specialises in sharing plates, taking inspiration from a range of countries and cuisines. Think whipped cod roe with furikake and endive; creamy burrata with Isle of Wight tomatos, garlic, chilli and anchovy; and crispy haddock with curry sauce and fermented gooseberries. The vibe is laid back – almost a gastropub atmosphere, with leather banquettes, wine stacked up against the back wall and big windows that let light flood in.

Five March
Best for: A balmy evening
You’ll find Five March on a quiet street adjacent to Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park, where it’s lovely to sit outside and share globally inspired small plates with avant-garde drinks (the Mezcal, fermented corn, avocado and xocolatl cocktail is utterly unexpected). Star dishes include the tangy hispi cabbage, with a dill and parsley crumb, and yuzu koshu cream; buttery trout tartare, with yuzu, tapioca, and squid ink; and the beef rib, with black pepper sauce, mooli, kohlrabi and chilli. Brett
Best for: Food and wine pairings
Despite being a tiny corner restaurant, Brett manages to pack a lot into a few square metres with a handful of high tables, a run of bar stools and a mini mezzanine. The food is mainly produced right there in front of you in the open kitchen, and is a wonderful medley of flavours pushed to full throttle via the team’s obsession with big, bold flavours. The chefs kindly do a lot of the hard work for you in dishes like chicken wings with clams where the cuts are carefully deboned then drenched in hot sauce and a smoked chicken emulsion. Many things do change on the menu, but one staple is the mushroom and XO linguine which is topped with crispy leeks and creamy Cantabrian anchovies – it remains a firm favourite for its addictive, rich flavour profile. There’s also a great biodynamic wine list, so even if you just want a glass of something cold and a few snacks, Brett provides a buzzy bar vibe in which to do that.

Opened by Monir Mohammed in 1990, Mother India is a Glasgow institution: an Edwardian space run by suited waiters, with candelabras and high-backed Charles Rennie Mackintosh chairs. Order the phenomenal butter chicken, served in a cast-iron skillet and drenched in a deeply rich sauce, then mop up the piquant sauce with an order of peshwari naan – lightly sweet and still hot from the tandoor.
