Trattoria Masuelli San Marco
For old-school Milanese eats, the family-run Trattoria Masuelli San Marco, which sits between the Porta Romana and Porta Vittoria neighbourhoods, has been a mainstay since 1921. Upon arrival, it definitely feels like stepping back in time: a multi-hued 1930s Venini chandelier by Gio Ponti dangles overhead, vintage Thonet chairs flank white-linen-topped tables and wood panels partially cover the walls. The menu sticks to Milanese classics with a few Piedmontese dishes woven in for good measure, and it’s safe to say it hasn’t changed much over the decades—in the best way possible. Expect risotto alla milanese, ossobuco and the veal cutlet, along with agnolotti del plin, a filled pasta from Piedmont and beef tartare. A standout is the pasta e fagioli, an old-school version so thick and creamy that it arrives with the spoon standing upright in the bowl. Moebius Sperimentale
Named for French cartoonist Jean Giraud’s pseudonym, Moebius evokes the surreal whimsy that characterised the work of its eponym. The 700-square-metre former textile factory multitasks as a cocktail bar, tapas bistrot, live music venue, vinyl shop, and a fine-dining restaurant: the Michelin-starred Moebius Sperimentale. Enclosed in a suspended glass “box” of sorts that gazes down at the ground floor, the restaurant seats 12 (including six at the chef’s counter) and is reached via a staircase tucked snugly beside a 700-year-old Andalusian olive tree. There, chef Enrico Croatti offers three tasting menus – Mare (sea), Terra (land), and Libertà (freedom) – that revisit tradition with innovation and haute techniques. The Carmignani family, who have owned Da Martino since 1950, just reopened their beloved trattoria following a significant revamp, trading the old-school ambience for a more modern aesthetic with terrazza floors, wood details and shades of terracotta. But much else remains unchanged – the owners still take their ingredient sourcing as seriously as any Michelin-starred chef, crafting a menu that changes daily and leans heavily toward Slow Food Praesidium products. Once November arrives, expect the cardo gobbo (hunchback thistle) from Nizza Monferrato fried and served with a stracchino cheese fonduta. In the summer, you might find panissa, or chickpea fritters, in a wild garlic sauce with marinated zucchini and quartirolo, a soft, crumbly cheese from Lombardy. Though two standbys endure: the “elephant ear” style cutlet, made with pork instead of veal, always served with fried shank, and a warm house-made apple cake, accompanied by a scoop of fresh mascarpone. Alongside the menu, the Carmignani family tends to one of the most intriguing wine cellars in town, with about 200 small producers from France and Italy, including bottles from elusive gems like Cantina Pizzo Coca in Valtellina and Claire Naudin in Burgundy.

Contraste
This past spring, chef Matias Perdomo unveiled a new look at his Michelin-starred Contraste, which occupies a 19th-century residential building east of the Naviglio Pavese. The restyling enhanced the original surfaces, stuccos, frescoes, doors, windows, and the large wood fireplace, transforming the enfilade of white walls and wooden floors into a series of brightly coloured rooms inspired by the four elements. Perdomo made a name for himself by manipulating ingredients and flavours and teasing palates with cerebral surprises undercut with an occasional touch of humour. For Contraste’s latest chapter, his approach remains playful but explores new connections between ingredients, flavours, and textures. The two tastings, “Riflessi” and “Riflessioni”, each comprise 20 bites and cost 180 euros per person. In the interest of not oversharing as the restaurant is best-experienced bias-free, expect, say, a lobster preparation with mango, coffee, and olives or smoky chestnut pulp and tuna bottarga with prosciutto broth.

Savour DuoCucina Franca
Chefs Facundo Castellani and Gianluca Santamato’s Cucina Franca is not your typical Italian joint. Instead, it falls more within the “new-wave” Italian realm typical of several newish establishments. The team executes everything on a smaller level, starting with the cozy shoebox of a dining room that seats just 20 between the ground floor, the chef’s counter flanking the open kitchen, and a loft. The daily changing menu foregoes the restrictions of the typical antipasti, primi, and secondi template, positing just ten dishes designed for sharing and a couple of street foods – expect lots of veggies, some fish, and very little meat. You might find roasted carrots drizzled with a Campari and cuttlefish ink reduction, grilled Jerusalem artichoke in a “tonnato” (tuna and anchovy) sauce with capers, or porcini mushrooms and panella (chickpea fritters) with a king trumpet mushroom mayo. You can’t beat the tasting: six savoury dishes and one sweet for 38 euros per person. The compact wine list offers no more than 20 wines from excellent small producers.

Davide Oldani opened his restaurant D’O in 2003 in Cornaredo, just outside Milan, and got his second Michelin star in 2020. His founding idea was to provide high-quality dining for everyone. And that’s what he achieved. Since then, his caramelised onion, saffron risotto and duck magret have been delighting discerning palates at a reasonable price. The waiting list is long – very long. I live next door to this restaurant and go there more often than I should admit. It’s an Italian bistro with excellent wines and a menu of interesting pairings such as cod and coconut, as well as one of the best Milanese risottos. Antonio Guida is the chef of Mandarin Oriental Hotel’s restaurant Seta, very close to via Manzoni and via Montenapoleone. He draws inspiration from French cuisine – he worked with Pierre Gagnaire in Paris for a long time – but also from his native Puglia. Antonio’s risotto is to die for, as is another one of his most famous dishes: oysters with potatoes. It’s also lovely to be able to dine in the kitchen, watching the crew work in perfect harmony.

After a dismaying 11-month closure, the beloved La Latteria reopened in November 2024, much to the delight of the Milanesi. La Latteria’s chef, Arturo Maggi, has spent a lifetime in this tiny kitchen. He cooks with organic ingredients grown in his small patch of garden while his wife waits on a handful of tables and his son pours the wine, or rather the “vinello”. You will find all of Milan here – from Barnaba Fornasetti to Japanese students, designers, and intellectuals. Subtly spicy, perfectly cooked, al-dente spaghetti is served with green chilli and lemon; thinly sliced vegetables and eggs are fried in a silver pan to preserve the flavours. Of course, there are also puddings such as the extraordinary pastries of Cordon Bleu graduate Galdina Della Seta or signora Maria’s apples with gelato. Sometimes Arturo comes out of the kitchen – a bit of a grump – grunts a greeting and goes back in.
