Best for: A neighbourhood hotspot
Be it a Tuesday or Saturday night, there’s always a buzz in and outside of Dorian, on Notting Hill’s understated but if-you-know-you-know Talbot Road. Picture the kind of old school bistro you might find on a residential street in lower Manhattan playing house beats, with a bar stocked enough to make the nichest of cocktails, and an unabashedly cool crowd – not rushing to their reservations for the sake of being seen, but to come together over quality dining. The fanciness is all in the food, here, (our pistachio ice cream is casually topped with caviar) and is worth booking even just for the starters. To begin, we order the insanely good liver parfait on toast and repeat order the rösti topped with vacherin and shaved white truffles – painful for the purse, but a bite to remember. The star, though, is the steak: sirloin for us, which we can’t believe is supposedly the more modest option (the restaurant also makes a mean ribeye and T-bone). We’re asked to order our steak before even browsing the cocktail menu, to give the chef ample time to prepare. It arrives crisp and glazed on the outside, juicy and super-rare on the inside (our preference) – a sauce or side almost feels like a sin, though let the waiters sort you out with the right glass of red to pair. Berners Tavern
Best for: A central steak spot
Finding a restaurant that features excellent steak, an impressive bar, cosy interiors and a stellar location is no mean feat – but Berners Tavern ticks all the boxes. Just off Oxford Street, this steak spot is often overlooked by those put off by the masses of crowds, but we promise it's worth it. Inside, candle-lit tables and cosy banquettes are dotted around a vast dining room, with soaring stuccoed ceilings and walls adorned with an staggering collection of frames and paintings. Choose your cut of steak (rib eye, sirloin, fillet) or opt to share a chateaubriand or côte de boeuf for a dish cooked to perfection – we barely needed the steak knife to cut through the meat. Sides are equally as delicious; order the truffle mash and crispy roasted tenderstem broccoli, or if you're really hungry try the truffle mac and cheese.

Lutyens Grill
Best for: Midweek glamour
Strolling into The Ned in Bank on a Thursday evening is quite an experience for the senses. The vast hall that welcomes guests is stuffed to the brim with post-work revellers ready to prematurely see in the weekend, while the platform in the middle hosts a live band. It’s all very fun, but when I strode through the crowds and stepped into Lutyens, I couldn’t deny that I felt my shoulders drop a little at the quiet that surrounded me suddenly. The low-lit dining room feels like stepping into old-time New York, and the menu certainly reflects that. Classic steaks come in multiple cuts – we went for the Porterhouse, and loved how tender the meat was on both sides – and the accompanying dishes are as rich and delicious as you’d imagine: creamy lobster mac and cheese and 15-hour potatoes with truffle are a must. Come hungry, you’ll need an empty stomach to make it to dessert – we had beef fat chocolate marquise with bay leaf ice cream, which was absolutely worth the wait. Abigail Malbon

This pared-back spot is everything you want from a steak restaurant. It's unpretentious and unstuffy, placing total emphasis on the reason diners book a table here – the steak. Stroll over to the kitchens to see each cut laid out and choose the one that strikes your fancy. Dishes here are made to share – start with spiced potato crisps topped with melt-in-your-mouth La Noir de Bigorre ham and smoked piparra peppers and super fresh Cantabrian anchovies drizzled with arbequina olive oil, before moving on to a couple of dishes from the menu's ‘embers’ or ‘grill’ section (the king crab rice is incredibly moreish but very filling – tread carefully if you want to feast on as much steak as you can muster). Then, the main event. Check the specials and ask your waiter which cuts are still remaining (they can sell out quickly at peak times). Take your pick, pair with a sauce. I'd recommend the anchovy and herb if you'd like to keep things fresh and light, the Ossau-Iraty and black pepper sauce was delicious, but quite heavy. It's the perfect date night spot. Niall CluttonCUT at 45 Park Lane
Best for: A vast selection of prime cuts
As Wolfgang Puck’s only London restaurant, I had high expectations for CUT at 45 Park Lane. Luckily for me, they were met – and more – by the quality of steak served at this classic restaurant in one of London’s fanciest addresses. The restaurant itself is long and narrow, with plenty of privacy from other diners, particularly if you’re sitting in a booth or window seat. And while the steaks are plentiful and delicious – more on that in a second – the snacks and starters shouldn’t be missed. We indulged in a warm bread basket (not needed, but so delicious thanks to the cheesy roll) and some more tuna tartare snacks, before sharing a lobster roll and scallops – the latter of which was particularly memorable thanks to the juicy, meaty scallops and the rich butter sauce, with just a hint of chilli, that they were cooked in. Before selecting our steaks, we were presented with them raw, and the wonderful staff talked us through what to expect from each. I opted for an Australian wagyu filet that was tender and flavourful (no sauce needed) and added some creamed potato and broccoli on the side. Of course, each steak needs its perfect wine pairing, so lean on the expertise of the restaurant’s excellent sommelier to help you choose. The smokehouse-style menu at Temper's three branches is fuelled by a whole-animal ethos: prime cuts of beef are used for massive slabs of steak – porterhouse, rump, rib-eye, T-bone – while smaller pieces are made into skewers or carnitas for tacos. As for the rest of the cow, this is where the special menu comes in. Beef brisket is doused in Tajín and paratha, while house prime cuts such as porterhouse and picaña often feature on the rotating menu; once they're gone, they're gone, however. Can't get enough of the barbecued goodness? Flamed meats are paired with bottomless drinks on Saturdays and Sundays at selected restaurants. If endless fizz isn't of interest, booths and private tables create an almost clandestine atmosphere ideal for long dinners with fellow steak aficionados.

The Shoreditch restaurant scene gained this special, meat-focused Italian in 2021 – its expertly crafted menu and the cool-but-welcoming atmosphere immediately made it a must-visit. The British beef is bought as a quarter-cow from specialist butchers Casa Txuleta, whose animals are grazed for years longer than your average beef herd. This makes for plenty of marbling and an intense flavour, and Manteca’s nose-to-tail ethos means there are often unusual cuts on offer.

Blacklock
Best for: A meat feast
There's something especially satisfying about a chop, and Blacklock exploits that in its own way. The menu has six kinds of bone-in beef, but choose their 'all in' option if you have the appetite: a pile of steak, pork and lamb on flatbreads to soak up all the wonderfully savoury juices, plus a side dish – the barbecued baby gems with anchovy dripping is a luxurious way to eat your greens – all for £28 per person. Their cocktail offering is a treat, too, with classics starting at £9.50, and even an alcohol-free Negroni (£7).

Flat Iron
Best for: When you're on a budget
The eponymous cut served at this chic-looking mini-chain is flavoursome but tricky to tenderise, hence its low cost. But with a combination of sous-vide prep and super-hot searing, the slabs of meat at Flat Iron come out as soft and juicy as sirloin, and it costs just £15, including a side of house salad. Your bill will come up a little higher than that, though, because it would be foolish not to get a pot of dripping cooked chips, and the roast aubergine with tomato, basil and mozzarella is rather special, too.

Stakehaus
Best for: A street food favourite
Owned and run by meat enthusiast Lily Bovey (who has also co-founded an ethical burger brand, GROUND), this street food favourite has its permanent home at Camden Market, but can also often be found at Kerb’s Southbank food market. Lily’s menu is the simple stuff done right: the steak is cooked to order and smothered with chilli butter, chimichurri, garlic butter or even a fried egg, all piled on top of super-crispy chips. If you’re properly on the go, the steak sandwich is your friend; the tender slices of bavette are packed into a brioche bun with caramelised onions and garlic parmesan mayo.

The Coal Shed
Best for: Surf as well as turf
Though the Tower Bridge development that houses The Coal Shed is almost corporate-looking, the chic interiors and smiling staff give the restaurant a warmth that rounds out the excellent food. The whole place smells gently of woodsmoke – a teaser trailer for the fresh fish and steaks that are being crisped on the grills. The wine list here is a treat, too, with an excellent selection of 500ml carafes. Get the deliciously floral Australian Riesling and perhaps also a little glass of Chilean late harvest Sauvignon Blanc to go with your blackberry pavlova or churros with dulce de leche.

Best for: Steak on the go
The beauty of steak is its easy-breezy nature; there's a size, shape and cooking technique to suit every schedule. This is demonstrated by the banging sandwiches that The Beefsteaks whip up with little more than a portable griddle and a gazebo. Known for its full flavour and subtle marbling, their hanger steak is cooked to order and sliced into strips to reveal a lovely pink middle. It fills a Vietnamese-style baguette and is complemented by red-onion jam, watercress and the sauce of your choice. And it's a difficult choice: bone-marrow peppercorn, Béarnaise, chimichurri or horseradish cream – one of each?

Sam HarrisQuality Chop House
Best for: A sophisticated British affair
Serving, as the name suggests, quality chops since 1869, this London institution is a staple on any ‘must visit’ London restaurant list. Interiors are a blast from the past – chessboard flooring, vintage booths with pendant lighting and ornate high ceilings where chalkboards hang scribbled with the house's special wines. When we dined on an autumnal Saturday afternoon, every table was full, with a jam-packed dinner service to follow. We are all here for the infamous steak cuts that are seared in a pan, popped in the oven twice over and doused in heaps of butter and thyme before being laid to rest and slow-cooked in their meaty juices. Best for: A French classic
You’ve likely heard about this steak house, which currently has two London sites, one in the city and one in Marylebone. Queues start weaving around the block before doors open and continue throughout the evening. There’s only one thing on the menu, and that’s the house steak served with thin crispy fries, a side of vinaigrette-soaked salad leaves and that famous green sauce which is poured over the steak table side by a flurry of waiting staff donning old-school pinafores. The reason for the queue, though, is not only due to that buttery delicious secret sauce (which you’ll never find out the recipe for) but because once you’ve finished your first plate, a second serving of the all too good medium rare steak is dished up for round two.
