Mar Hall
Mar Hall profits from perhaps the best view of any Glasgow hotel thanks to its perch above the River Clyde. During our stay the mists rolled in off the water and across the opposite hills to create an Outlander-worthy scene that was taken in through double-height, gothic-style windows in our suite. Despite having been a hotel for years, recently Mar Hall has changed beyond recognition, having had a top-to-toe makeover thanks to an injection of new investor money. The results are a beautifully restored building picked out in jewel colours and gilded plasterwork to reinstate some of the original grandeur of the site, which was built as a private home in 1828. Downstairs there’s a welcoming lobby lounge that leads onto the comfortable central bar, with the restaurant and cocktail bar beyond. There’s an onsite spa (one of our best spas in Scotland picks), as well as a games room and snug in the basement. Rooms have wide appeal with timeless furnishings that include beautifully upholstered lounges and grand pianos in some of the larger categories. While there’s undeniable appeal inside, part of this spot’s allure is what’s waiting outside. In the immediate vicinity there are lovely touches like bucket swings hanging from ancient trees, a beautiful rose garden brought back to life from the house’s early plans and pétanque areas too boot, but within twenty minutes either way you have some of Glasgow’s best restaurants to the east and the expansive shores of Loch Lomond to the west, and all the adventures that has the potential to bring.

Crossbasket Castle
Honey-hued Crossbasket Castle sits on the fringes of the city, straddling a please-all line between metropolitan and rural living. With its pretty grounds and generous proportions, it’s a favourite for couples looking to tie the knot somewhere that’s quintessentially Scottish without being too twee, but equally lovely as a weekend escape from whatever chores are waiting for you in the real world. Having recently undergone a multi-million pound makeover, now’s the time to visit for the latter. Everything has been given a little extra polish without any of the original charm having been buffed away. In the main house the rooms are comfortably appointed with plush beds and antique furnishings, while more contemporary, cosy cottages across the grounds allow families to sprawl out. On site there’s a restaurant backed by Michel Roux Jnr himself which fairly unexpectedly also majors in cabaret theme nights, of which (you’ll be surprised to hear) there are very few – if any – of elsewhere in Glasgow. Expect a mix of classic French cookery and contemporary Scottish cuisine made with local ingredients and a bit of extra theatre for good measure. In 2026 a brand new spa is to be unveiled, further adding to the hotel’s appeal.

Kimpton Blythswood Square
Housed in what was once The Royal Scottish Automobile Club, the Blythswood Square hotel is undoubtedly the city’s grandest option. It sits facing the square’s immaculate private gardens, making it feel like a little oasis, yet it’s just a five minute walk to central station and Buchanan Street’s sweep of shops. Marble bathrooms and comfortably appointed rooms (if you can, ask for a garden view) plus the pretty downstairs restaurant with its striking green scalloped tile clad bar all contribute to it being busy and buzzy any day of the week.
Aside from the expected five star hotel amenities, there’s also a recently renovated spa which residents have exclusive access to twice a day. With a snow room, multiple saunas, a steam room, a jacuzzi, and a sizeable swimming pool, it’s the ideal place to unwind after diving head first into the best things to do in Glasgow.

Based in Cathedral House, Celentano’s has been a favourite on Glasgow’s restaurant scene for three years, but the hotel above it has only recently come under the guardianship of owners Anna and Dean. They’ve added their signature style to rooms with contemporary artworks and chic, pared back furnishings to create comfortable quarters in the city’s east end.
The restaurant downstairs holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and has since it opened, so breakfast here is a highlight. You’ll find little pots of homemade yoghurt in your fridge and a loaded basket arrives come morning, stacked with house-made granola, sourdough and sweet baked goods plus carefully sourced cheese - all to be eaten in bed or downstairs in the dining room, if you prefer.
While you’re over this way, pop into the mediaeval cathedral (where Glasgow University was founded), explore the impressive Necropolis perched on the hill or take shelter at the Celentano’s bar to enjoy drinks and snacks like Negronis and mushroom lasagne fritti.

The epitome of maximalist, House of Gods already had a successful Edinburgh outpost by the time the brand opened in Glasgow. This time things are even more opulent, with just 28 rooms bedecked in lavish soft furnishings that range from four poster beds to tiger print sofas piled high with velvet cushions. This is categorically for those who like a more is more approach. The Presidential Suite benefits from dark wood panelled walls, its own lounge, a beautiful roll top tub in the bedroom and a separate gargantuan marble bathroom.

Ideal for group trips and romantic weekends, The Address in Glasgow profits from a beautifully designed mini spa complete with gym, plunge pool, relaxation room and Himalayan sauna which is ideal for recuperating tired muscles after days stomping around on a city break.
There are just two categories of rooms, which include a Classic and a Club, with the only real difference being the size, not the design, so even if you go for the more budget-friendly option you shouldn’t feel hard done by. All of them come complete with expected extras like robes and toiletries, but also Nespresso machines and desks in case you’re in need of caffeine and somewhere to concentrate while you’re in town.

Hotel du Vin
One Devonshire Gardens was once the creme de la creme of Glasgow’s hospitality scene, and while it might not be the new kid on the block anymore it still holds a certain charm. Rooms are comfortable if not contemporary, and are spacious with large bathrooms (many of which have deep tubs). The charming staff give a properly warm Scottish welcome when you arrive too, and are on hand to offer local recommendations. Another draw is its covetable location in the smart West End with its run of homeware shops, boutique bakeries, restaurants and parks. A stroll through the Botanic Gardens with a Cotton Rake pastry in hand is truly one of life’s little pleasures. If you prefer to stay put there’s also a reasonable fine dining restaurant on site that sticks to the classics but does them well with an AA rating to prove it.

Dakota Glasgow, owned by renowned Glaswegian hotelier Ken McCulloch and his wife, interior designer Amanda Rosa, is one of the best hotels in the area, not least because of its location in the heart of the city. With a wealth of experience from launching One Devonshire Gardens and Malmaison in Glasgow, McCulloch has meticulously crafted the Dakota brand to appeal to young professionals who want a combination of aesthetics and amenities.
The hotel offers generously sized rooms, each thoughtfully designed with plush sofas and new, supremely comfortable beds. The attention to detail is evident in the additional touches, such as Sky TV, allowing you to truly unwind and make yourself at home. You can’t get more central than Native’s enviable address just off of George Square (which leads into Queen St Station). It’s the ideal base if you have work - or play - to do in town. The Edwardian building it sits in has sympathetically been restored to house 64 apartments. Here you’ll find nice little touches of a boutique hotel, like original features and plush layered beds, coupled with the convenience of having your own living room and kitchen in every room in line with the brand’s aparthotel billing.
Downstairs there are a couple of restaurants too, and there’s always someone around on reception to answer queries, which is helpful if you’re new to the city.
